How current does the information need to be?
A daily report for planning has different needs from an alert that requires action. The useful questions are how quickly the information is needed and what a delay would mean in practice.
We use those needs to define reporting, data storage and behaviour during connection loss. For example, storing readings for later delivery may suit reporting, while an alerting function may also need a way to indicate that the connection is unavailable.
The installation affects running costs
A connection through the existing network brings different installation and support work from a device with its own subscription. The practical choice depends on the site and who will maintain it.
Battery changes matter too. In a remote location, a longer service interval can save visits. We assess the connectivity and power requirements together, including their effect on device size, cost and maintenance.
Connections and software are designed together
The solution may use wired connections, wireless connections or a combination. We select the approach around the product and design the software, updates and recovery from interruptions as part of the same work.
